The developmental edit process focuses mainly on improving big-picture story elements. This editing step addresses story element issues like plot holes, poor character development, confusing dialogue, sentence phrasing, and any other problems concerning story elements.
Structure editing typically refers to modifying or reorganizing a written document's structure or organization, such as an essay, article, or report. It involves changing the content's overall flow, coherence, and logical arrangement to improve clarity, readability, and overall effectiveness.
Also known as substantive editing or developmental editing involves reviewing and improving the substance, organization, and overall quality of the content in a written document.
Also known as line-by-line editing, it improves the clarity, style, grammar, punctuation, and overall readability of a written document at the sentence and paragraph level.
Copyediting is the process of checking for mistakes, inconsistencies, and repetition to arrive at a polished manuscript. The copy editing step is also known as the 4 Cs—clarity, coherency, consistency, and correctness—all in service of communication, the “Cardinal C.”
Proofreading is the final stage of the editing process, focusing on surface errors such as misspellings and mistakes in grammar and punctuation. It would be best to proofread only after finishing your other editing process.
